Our Center has started the new academic exchange program »Knowledge in Society« together with the Cohn Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Ideas at the Tel Aviv University. Until the end of 2019, PhD students, PostDocs and professors of both institutions, the Cohn Institute and the ZGW, will have the opportunity to visit the partner institution and present their research. The goal of the program is to promote international academic exchange in the field of knowledge history.

Revolutionärer Internationalismus in der frühen Sowjetgesellschaft, 1917-1927« gleich zwei Mal: Mit dem Wissenschaftspreis der Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung Sachsen, mit dem jährlich WissenschaftlerInnen geehrt werden, die sich auf originelle und kritische Weise mit drängenden gesellschaftlichen Problemen beschäftigen. Ausserdem erhielt er von der Universitätsgesellschaft Bielefeld den Dissertationspreis 2015. Wir gratulieren!

At the beginning of July historians met under the heading »The Good Years!« on the »Mountain of Truth« (Monte Verità) to dicuss possible ways of investigating the recent history 1980-2010. Read an interview with David Gugerli, one of the conference`s organisers, as well as Leslie Post`s and Roman Wild`s and Magaly Tornay`s conference reports as first impressions of that »intellectual adventure«, as the organisers announced the event beforehand.

The concept of aesthetic autonomy has been most influential since its beginnings in the 18th century. One of the consequences of its success is that theatre is widely regarded as an art, thus emphasising its supposedly noninstrumental character. However, politics and the theatre do not have to be consicdered as entities independent from one another. The interdisciplinary workshop aims at thinking about theatricality not merely as a property of the theatre as an institution but as a figure of thought which shapes political processes and is in turn shaped by it. Supervised by the professors Michael Hagner (ETHZ & ZGW), Floris Heukelom and Klaas Landsman (both Radboud University Nijmegen), students of the MA History and Philosophy of Knowledge at the ZGW (Julian Jäggi, Stefan Scheidegger, Martin Wasmer, Hermann-Johannes Kerl, Tilman Hoffer) have written a report for the Rathenau Institute, a research institute of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences, together with students from the Radboud University Nijmegen. It deals with the relation of science and national wealth, taking the *Flagship Initiave *of the least EU Research Framework Programme as an example. You find the report hier.

Michel Foucault figures among the icons of today's cultural and social sciences. The French philosopher and historian is productively read, quoted, discussed, refuted, and recycled in virtually every cultural and social scientific discipline. Voiced in 1975, Foucault's invitation that people should help themselves to his works and concepts as if using a 'toolbox' ('make of it what you will') was so widely taken up that the toolbox has since become standard equipment above all for the work of the cultural sciences. But today, thirty years after Foucault's death, we–the group of editors of the foucaultblog–also face questions regarding the historicisation of this tool box with its instruments whose applicability seems independent of the context of their origins. We would like to warmly welcome Patrick Kupper, Privatdozent for Modern History with a special focus on history of the environment, of technology and knowledge at the ETH Zurich, as a new temporarily associated member at our competence center. At the same time, Caspar Hirschi who has been ZGW associate since 2010 will leave us, taking up a position as professor for history at the University of St. Gallen. We would like to thank him for a great time and an enriching intellectual exchange.

Im März 2012 begrüssen wir Dr. William Clark, Lecturer am Department of History der UC San Diego als Gast am ZGW. Bills Arbeiten sind im Feld der Wissenschaftsgeschichte einschlägig. Insbesondere sein Buch zum Academic Charisma wurde weit rezipiert. Wir wollen mit ihm darüber, aber auch über seine neueren Arbeiten zu den Mythen der Wissenschaft sowie zum Atomic Age diskutieren. Für die ›Wissensgeschichte‹ ist der Begriff »Zirkulation« konstitutiv. Der Ansicht, dass Wissen in exklusiven Settings entsteht, um sich von dort aus zu verbreiten, hält die Wissensgeschichte entgegen, dass auch die Praxis im Labor auf Geräte, Diskursmuster und Wissen zurückgreifen muss, die nicht im Labor selbst entstanden sind, sondern weit außerhalb davon. Als zirkulierendes Gut wird Wissen in unterschiedlichen Medien formatiert, verändert sich im Übergang von einer Repräsentationsweise zur nächsten und ist in Machtverhältnisse verstrickt.

Am Institut für Geschichte der ETH Zürich sind per 1.4. 2011 zwei Doktoratsstellen zu besetzen.

Vorbehältlich der Mittelzusprache durch den Schweizerischen Nationalfonds suchen wir im Rahmen des Forschungsprojekts Vom 'Human Motor' zum 'Human Capital': Untersuchungen zur Geschichte der Wissensgesellschaft in der Schweiz (1960-2000) zwei Mitarbeiterinnen oder Mitarbeiter mit Hochschulabschluss im Fach Geschichte. Die Mitarbeit bietet die Möglichkeit zur Promotion. Die eine Doktoratsstelle befindet sich im Themenbereich der Militärgeschichte, die andere in der Geschichte des Bildungswesens der Schweiz. Hat die Zukunft eine Schweiz? Historiker David Gugerli im Gespräch mit Roger de Weck

Das neue helvetische Malaise liege «im drohenden Verlust des politisch liberalen und sozialstaatlich korrigierten Projekts einer bundesstaatlichen Schweiz», sagt Gugerli. Nicht etwa die Schokoladenseite von Helvetia ist in Gefahr, ewig bleibt die Idylle der Kuhglocken und Alphornklänge. Aber die Zeiger der Luxusuhren stehen auf fünf vor zwölf, dringlich ist ein neues «Vorhaben Schweiz», aus dem auch ein neues Selbstbild hervorgehen wird. (online)

Für die nächsten drei Jahre wird am Zentrum Geschichte des Wissens eine Gastprofessur für Wissenschaft und Judentum eingerichtet. Die Gastprofessur wurde durch die großzügigen Zuwendungen von Christiane und Nicolaus Weickart ermöglicht. Im Frühjahrssemester 2010 besetzt Thomas Meyer die Gastprofessur.

As a joint venture, the ZGW and Swiss Radio DRS have created a new radio program called Wissenstalk. During half an hour, members of the ZGW talk with different guests from science and society about current scientific topics.

The new Master Program in the History and Philosophy of Knowledge is an interdisciplinary course that teaches proficiency in the history of the modern world, history of science and technology, philosophy, and literature and social science studies. The two-year course enables students to carry out research on the role of science and technology in social change in a selected field (such as energy, neuroscience or applied mathematics) of the humanities or social sciences.
