In 2011, we introduced a new academic guest program. Each year we invite 2-4 peers to stay at our competence center for one month - in spring or fall semester. We are interested in inspiring intellectual exchange in the field of history of knowledge in Zurich. During their stay our guests are invited to contribute to our ongoing debates by offering special workshops, lectures and/or other public forums.
ZGW – Cohn Institut, Tel Aviv
Our Center has started the new academic exchange program »Knowledge in Society« together with the Cohn Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Ideas at the Tel Aviv University. Until the end of 2019, PhD students, PostDocs and professors of both institutions, the Cohn Institute and the ZGW, will have the opportunity to visit the partner institution and present their research. The goal of the program is to promote international academic exchange in the field of knowledge history.
We are grateful for the support of the Daniel Gablinger-Stiftung which funds the exchange program on the part of the ZGW.
The Guest Professorship »Science and Jewish Culture« was introduced in 2010. It is made possible by the generous support of Dr. Christiane and Dr. Nicolaus-Jürgen Weickart. It is organized and coordinated by Andreas Kilcher and Michael Hagner.
The Guest Professorship »Science and Jewish Culture« focuses mainly on two fields of research: general history and philosophy of science and the relation of science to society, religion and culture - foremost Jewish culture. We are especially interested in the formation and interpretation of sciences in Jewish culture since early modernity, as well as the scientific understanding of Jewish culture itself, and how it emerged in the context of new scientific models, like for example the paradigm of Jewish studies.

Workshop: The Notion of Modernity – Non Eurocentric Perspectives Science is still all too often identified with Western science, i.e. science in Western Europe, and its history is written accordingly. The scientific work of other cultures, whether in the Greek tradition (this is the case of science in Syriac, Arabic, Hebrew and Latin, notably) or outside it (science in China and India, notably) is situated on the margins of mainstream narrative of the history of science. This workshop will focus on one, albeit crucial, question: that of the modernity in science – its nature and its emergence. (program)
