Im Anschluss an eine erste Tagung "Saisir le terrain / Terrain und Kultur" 2013 in Frankfurt am Main will das Zu?rcher Symposion das Querschnittthema der Wissensmedien und der mit ihnen verbundenen Praktiken in der historischen und ethnologischen Kulturforschung vertiefen. "Saisir le terrain / Terrain und Kultur II" ru?ckt die Untersuchung der Techniken und Medien raumbezogenen Forschens in ihrer historischen Gewordenheit seit der Ausbildung einer differenzierten Fachlandschaft im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts (diachron) und in ihren Beziehungen zu sozialen und technischen Entwicklungen (synchron) ins Zentrum der Diskussion.

Vernunft als Fähigkeit von Personen, sich selbst und ihre Handlungen und Überzeugungen zu begründen, erschöpft sich nicht in privaten Überlegungen. Gerade auch in der öffentlichen Argumentation, verstanden als Austausch von Gründen zwischen Personen, wenden wir unsere Fähigkeit zur Vernunft an. Öffentliche Räume, in denen dieser Austausch stattfinden kann, scheinen demnach eine wesentliche Rolle für Begründungen oder Rechtfertigungen zu spielen. In dem Workshop wollen wir uns diesem Verhältnis von Öffentlichkeit und Vernunft widmen: Inwiefern muss Vernunft in den jeweiligen Problembereichen, derer sie sich annimmt, öffentlich sein?

Knowledge is not fixed, but unstable, uncertain and evolving. In his recent book Plastic Reason (2016), Tobias Rees anthropologically investigates brain research in twenty-first-century Paris and the 'plasticity' of knowledge. Based on several years of fieldwork with neuronal researchers, he argues that knowledge – like the experimental systems of the natural sciences – is 'contingent on unarticulated conceptual presuppositions' that differ from place to place. Scientific thinking and knowledge production is, therefore, a very regional and relational, but also unstable and inherently uncertain affair.

How should we understand the massive growth in concern for cultural heritage that emerged around the world in the late twentieth century? Scholarly discussion of heritage tends either to assume the intrinsic necessity of preserving the traces of the past or to argue that the desire for heritage is part of a postmodern nostalgia reflecting the devolution of politics into consumerism. Yet the politics of cultural heritage are more diverse and complex than this. This lecture will review ideas presented in Tokyo Vernacular: Common Spaces, Local Histories, Found Objects (California, 2013) and set them in broader context.

Im historischen Selbstverständnis der Schweiz spielt Rassismus meist keine Rolle. Entsprechend sind Rassismus und Kolonialismus Themen, die andere etwas angehen. Stimmt dieses Selbstbild? Die Gesprächsrunde geht anhand von Quellenmaterial der Rolle des Rassismus in der Geschichte der Schweiz nach und fragt nach der Bedeutung der Schweiz in der globalen Geschichte des Rassismus. Sie spannt dabei den Bogen von der frühen Neuzeit bis in die Gegenwart.

Darwin's theory of evolution is often considered the underlying scientific framework of eugenics and racism in Nazi Germany. Darwin's importance notwithstanding, my aim is to show how it was Gregor Mendel's theory of heredity that became pivotal to German and Nazi eugenics, by supplying new terms, metaphors and methods for the identification of medical dangers and by influencing not only the works of scientists but also cultural and social medical perceptions.

Dem Verhältnis von Wissen und Wirtschaft ist in den letzten Jahren vermehrt Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt worden. Gefragt wurde nach der Funktion und Bedeutung von Metaphern in der Ökonomie oder der narrativen Struktur und Diskursivität des Ökonomischen. Bis heute sind diese Arbeiten aber nicht über erste, verstreute Ansätze zu einer Wissensgeschichte der Wirtschaft hinausgekommen. Das Netzwerk »Wissen und Wirtschaft« möchte der Rolle von Wissen im Wirtschaften nachgehen und interessiert sich für neue Forschungsperspektiven und methodische Ansätze einer Wissensgeschichte der Wirtschaft. Der Workshop versucht, erste theoretische und methodische Annäherungen an das Thema zu finden.

Die jüngere Forschung zu Thomas Manns Werk zeigt die Tendenz, sich ihrem Untersuchungsobjekt vermehrt aus kulturwissenschaftlicher, wissensgeschichtlicher, theoretisch fundierter Perspektive zu nähern und traditionalistisch-biographische Ansätze hinter sich zu lassen. Die jüngere Mann-Forschung insistiert mithin auf der Komplexität der Mann'schen Schreibprozesse, auf deren Aktualität und Anschlussfähigkeit für kulturwissenschaftliche und wissensgeschichtliche Erkenntnisinteressen. The concept of aesthetic autonomy has been most influential since its beginnings in the 18th century. One of the consequences of its success is that theatre is widely regarded as an art, thus emphasising its supposedly noninstrumental character. However, politics and the theatre do not have to be consicdered as entities independent from one another. The interdisciplinary workshop aims at thinking about theatricality not merely as a property of the theatre as an institution but as a figure of thought which shapes political processes and is in turn shaped by it. Voiced in 1975, Foucault's invitation that people should help themselves to his works and concepts as if using a 'toolbox' was so widely taken up that the toolbox has since become standard equipment above all for the work of the cultural sciences. But today, thirty years after Foucault's death, we–the group of editors of the foucaultblog–also face questions regarding the historicisation of this tool box with its instruments whose applicability seems independent of the context of their origins. How did this toolbox that we use actually come about? Today we should therefore set about writing the genealogy of the Foucauldian toolbox in order to understand it better, to be able to keep using it, but also to bring it up to date and adapt it to today's scholarly and political situation. Besteht überhaupt Bedarf das Urheberrecht zu novellieren? Welchen Interessen wird damit gedient? Wo sind die Gefahren «technischer Massnahmen» im Internet zur Durchsetzung von Urheberrechtsansprüchen? Wie können (alternativ) Kulturschaffende gerecht für ihre Arbeit entschädigt werden?

Es gibt im Kontext des Ersten Weltkriegs und der frühen Weimarer Republik vielleicht keine zweite Figur, die sowohl unter den ZeitgenossInnen als auch in der Nachwelt öfter zum Gegenstand von Erzählungen geworden ist als Walther Rathenau (1867-1922). Im Workshop soll es darum gehen, die historischen Narrative, Wissensformen und Handlungsweisen auf einander zu beziehen, die sich um die beharrlich unbestimmte Figur Rathenaus historisch angelagert haben und davon ausgehend, nach deren Wechselwirkungen und Funktionen zu fragen. The seminar will be dedicated to theoretical issues related to transfer, transmission, appropriation and naturalization of knowledge. Using the history of science as a laboratory for thinking on knowledge in general, emphasis will be put on construction of objects of discourse by social agents; on boundary crossing; and on authorization of knowledge. Furthermore, issues of center and periphery as well as knowledge in colonial contexts will be raised. Two case studies related to modern Israel will then be dealt with: the beginning of the humanities at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; the use of Russian literature in Israeli cultural and political discourse.(program / leaflet)

Generika sind seit den 1960er Jahren in aller Munde. Ihr Versprechen liegt in einer funktionellen Ähnlichkeit zu einem Markenprodukt ohne mit diesem identisch zu sein. Doch wie kann bewiesen werden, dass die Wirkungen tatsächlich gleichwertig sind? Mit der wachsenden Bedeutung von Generika haben auch solche erkenntnistheoretische und epidemiologische Probleme an Wichtigkeit gewonnen. Jeremy Greenes neues Buch (Generic: The Unbranding of Modern Medicine, 2014) befasst sich mit den Konflikten, die Generika auf dem amerikanischen Gesundheitsmarkt seit den 1960er Jahren ausgelöst haben. In einem öffentlichen Vortrag und in einem Follow-up Workshop wird Greene seine Thesen vorstellen und Auszüge aus seinem neuen Buch diskutieren. (leaflet)

What's in a name? We like to think that the principles of action of biomedical therapeutics are universal, yet we continue to give our remedies different names–both branded and generic–in different localities. This talk will trace efforts by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other actors in the mid to late 20th century to create an universal scientific language for pharmaceuticals, as part of a joint project to harmonize both the global field of biomedical research and the global market for pharmaceutical products. The conflation of neuropathology and psychopathology, a current trend in neuroscience, raises new questions. To what extent do people identify with their brain and cognitive patterns? How do they refer to the brain, cognition, etc. in their descriptions of what is going on for them? How do these references find their way into the tapestry of their lives? Do they lead people to ask themselves: is it mechanical or intentional? Is it both? How are these two aspects of illness related to one another? These are some questions this talk will explore through neurocognitive narratives. (poster)

Workshop on the 100. Birthday of Hermann Levin Goldschmidt: April 10, 2014
Das Werk des Philosophen Hermann Levin Goldschmidt bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle von kritischer Philosophie und jüdischem Denken in der Moderne. 1914 in Berlin geboren, emigrierte Goldschmidt 1938 in die Schweiz und gründete 1951 das Freie Jüdische Lehrhaus in Zürich, das er bis 1961 leitete. Die reiche Vielfalt der Geschichte jüdischer Traditionen war ihm eine lebendige Quelle, die er auf eigenständige Weise für die Entwicklung des dialogischen Denkens fruchtbar zu machen verstand. Aus Anlass seines hundertsten Geburtstags soll der Bedeutung seines Beitrags zur kritischen Philosophie nachgegangen werden. (program)

Wie der Unsinn trägt die Unlust das Negative bereits in ihrem Namen, der die finsteren Gefühlszonen jenseits der Lust bezeichnet. So liegt es wohl nicht allein am schönen Stabreim, wenn bisher Literatur lieber mit Lust gepaart worden ist als mit dem Gegenbegriff. Doch in den Texten selbst zeigt sich seit je eine mindestens ebenso grosse Attraktivität der Unlust, die auch in der ästhetischen Theorie eine zentrale Rolle spielt. Dabei ist das Verhältnis von Inhalt und Form oft keineswegs harmonisch: Es gibt lustlose Beschwörungen von Lust so gut wie leidenschaftliche Oden an die Unlust. Solche Schattenseiten beleuchtet der diesjährige Studientag, der sich den Imaginationen und Reflexionen von Unlust in Literatur, Ästhetik und Philosophie widmet. (program)

Changes to application and admission affect faculty, students and staff as well as the implementation of PhD curricula or of supervision and assessment committees. The panel discussion focuses on aspects of corporate academic responsibility for admission, supervision and the final assessment. How can common supervision and assessment have a positive impact on the quality of research carried out on the doctoral level? In three inputs our experts will share their personal evaluation of the changes relating to the doctorate and will talk about overall positive an negative impacts on faculty and the university and its institutions.

Angesichts der heutigen Debatten über den Anstieg von Berufskrankheiten (Depression, Burnout, Stress, »innere Kündigung« etc.) und in Anbetracht der sozialwissenschaftlichen Thesen zur »Subjektivierung von Arbeit« ist die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Arbeit und Humanität erneut virulent geworden. Rund 40 Jahre nach den Diskussionen zur »Humanisierung der Arbeitswelt« möchten wir den Blick auf die Zeit nach 1970 zurückwenden: Ist Arbeit seit den 1970er Jahren humaner geworden? Wie sind die Programme zur »Humanisierung der Arbeitswelt« und ihre Folgen retrospektiv zu beurteilen? In welchem Kontext sind sie entstanden? In welchen Praktiken und Massnahmen haben sie (in der Schweiz) Niederschlag gefunden? Sind humane Arbeit und ökonomisch produktive Lohnarbeit miteinander vereinbar? (program)

Poisons and poisoning occupy a significant but neglected place in the history of science, society and governance in modern India. This lecture considers why poisoning became so important to the British and their 'arsenical empire', especially through investigation into indigenous drugs and therapeutic practices, through criminal poisoning and the formation of a distinctly Indian system of medical jurisprudence, and through the development of a scientific agency (chemical examiners) for whom toxicology was a primary responsibility. Poison thus serves as an exemplification of how colonial science was constituted and evolved. (leaflet)

What can evolutionary theory tell us about economics? The link between the two disciplines was evident already in Darwin's recognition of his intellectual debt to Malthus and Smith. But the meaning of evolution in the social domain, in particular its economic and political implications, were from the outset the object of heated debates. Today there is still great disagreement as to how evolutionary principles can be applied to economics and what practical conclusions we can gain from understanding them. This seminar proposes to discuss the question of progress and purpose in cultural evolution through a review and critical analysis of the evolutionary theory proposed by Nobel laureate in economics, Friedrich August von Hayek.

Seit einiger Zeit wird in der Wissenschaftsgeschichte verstärkt über den Begriff der epistemischen Tugend diskutiert. Dem liegt die Beobachtung zugrunde, dass die methodische Hervorbringung von Wissen ohne erkenntnisfördernde Tugenden wie Geduld, Aufmerksamkeit, Genauigkeit, Skepsis, Wahrhaftigkeit, Neugierde, Strenge oder Zuverlässigkeit kaum möglich wäre. Auf dem Workshop sollen epistemische Tugenden in verschiedenen Disziplinen und historischen Konstellationen mit Blick auf die gesellschaftlichen und politischen Kontexte diskutiert werden. Welche epistemischen Tugenden sind konstitutiv für eine Wissenskultur? Wie werden sie von den Akteuren reflektiert? Und inwiefern unterscheiden sie sich von moralischen Tugenden? (program)

International Workshop: June 14-15, 2013
This workshop explores the concept of »colonialism without colonies« from two main perspectives: First, we look at countries that were not colonized but situated next to colonies. Second, we examine countries that were close to the metropoles without having been formal colonial powers. Finally, the question of whether a country belonged to the colonial regime or not is itself an object of debate. The workshop treats these questions in different studies related to eight specific countries. There is a strong focus on the interconnection of power and knowledge, as well as on the cultural effects of colonialism. The over-arching aim of the workshop is to develop, discuss and test the epistemic value and the heuristic reach of the concept of »colonialism without colonies«. (abstract & program).

Gemäß einer weitverbreiteten Auffassung ist sozio-kulturelle Assimilation ein hierarchischer Prozess, in dem einer Gruppe fremde Lebensgewohnheiten und Praktiken aufgenötigt werden. Aber ist das die ganze Geschichte? Gibt es nicht auch Phänomene, die in eine andere Richtung verweisen? Nach einem kosmopolitischen Verständnis handelt es sich bei Assimilation um ein wechselseitiges Verhältnis, in dem starre Grenzen und essentialisierte Identitäten verschwinden, in dem Gruppen einander ähnlich werden, ohne ihre Verschiedenheiten verlieren zu müssen. Wenn somit bereits der Begriff der Assimilation umstritten ist, gilt das umso mehr für das, was er bezeichnet: Es geht um die politische Frage, wie Menschen leben wollen – eine Frage, die immer schon mit polemischen Äußerungsformen verbunden ist.

Realism and universalism are commonly not seen as positive points of reference in postcolonial theory. In contrast to this, Satya Mohanty argues that some forms of realism can be of help for postcolonial theories of narration. According to him, the same applies to universalism that can serve as an important resource for a non-essentialised thinking about identity. In the workshop we will discuss these claims with Satya Mohanty on the basis of some extracts of his writings. In doing so, we will also look at the relations between narratology and epistemology that are at the centre of his theoretical approach. (leaflet)

Zwischen dem Ende der vierziger und der fünfziger Jahre des vergangenen Jahrhunderts entwickelte sich in Paris eine Zusammenarbeit der besonderen Art. Der Wissenschaftsphilosoph Gaston Bachelard (1884-1962) und der Kupferstecher Albert Flocon (1909-1994) schufen zusammen eine Reihe von bibliophilen Werken, zu denen Flocon die Gravuren und Bachelard die Texte lieferte. Letztere haben die Form von Reflexionen über die Hand des Stechers. Die Begegnung soll in dem Vortrag anhand einiger ausgewählter Beispiele lebendig werden. (poster)

In the early 21st century, we witness a re-emergence of discourses on Jews as a race in both the social sciences and in the fields of medicine and genetics. These discourses embody contradictory arguments: whereas some try to undermine the religious and Zionist ideologies, which argue that Jews are historically one people, others attempt to anchor the claim of Jewish particular genetic and racial commonalities using medicine and genetics. Our workshop aims to examine this new phenomenon by bringing together social and political scientists, historians of science and scholars from Jewish studies. (program)

Mobility and change are key imperatives in the age of globalized world trade. This applies for the material foundations of a world, too, which is based on permanent producitvity. In the workshop, we depart from this phenomenology of the modern material world in order to reflect on materiality. What if our modern material world is constituted through ongoing material translocation and transformation, rather than static material ontologies and element essentialism? In order to develop a critical perspective on this issue, we will also consider the historicity and the epistemology of current notions and metaphors such as material flows and global metabolism.
In the workshop, we will discuss precirculated papers for a special issue of the historiographical journal Zeitenblicke. The workshop is nonetheless open to public. (papers)

Audre Lorde war Schriftstellerin, Dozentin und Aktivistin der Schwarzen Bürger_innenrechtsbewegung, des Black Feminism und der lesbischen feministischen Bewegungin den USA. In Zürich hat sie mehrere Vorträge gehalten, die eine wichtige Inspiration für die Gründerinnen der »Women of Black Heritage« und des »Treffpunkts für Schwarze Frauen« in Zürich waren. Mit der Vorführung eines neuen Films über Lorde und einer anschliessenden Podiumsdiskussion geht es uns darum, an die politische Arbeit, die Schwarze Frauen und ihre Mitstreiterinnen in den letzten 30 Jahren in Zürich und der Schweiz geleistet haben, zu erinnern. Zugleich wollen wir fragen, wie die Verschränkung von Rassismus, Sexismus, Homophobie und Transphobie analysiert werden kann, und welche Formen von Widerstand und Politiken der Koalition sich dagegen anbieten. Ethics and Science are often brought into opposition: Following the liberal paradigm in the Philosophy of Science, they distort scientific results and should be separated from scientific research. An example for an alternative approach is the work of Lorraine Daston, in which the constitutive role of ethical assumptions and values for scientific research is taken into account. In the workshop, this new approach will be discussed. Not least we are interested in the implications it may have for current debates about how to design scientific research. Secondary, doctoral researchers will present their projects.

A Public Workshop: February 2, 2013
Presence, signifying both immediacy and being someplace at a particular moment , is one of the most controversial terms in contemporary culture and politics . The visual arts and philosophy in particular have sean much controversy about the various claims (positive and negative) related to concepts ranging from neurobiology to deconstruction . Even though the latter has shaped cultural discourse since the late 19608, from today's point of view it seams doubtful that we can dispense with the concept of presence too easily. Certain questions persist: how do we describe consciousness, experience, and temporality with reference to our bodies and the surrounding world? Can we understand and communicate these relations without falling into a false sense of security? (program)

Expert talks: Fall semester 2012
At the transition from the industrial to the knowledge society the concept of work and the working body as figures of theoretical and scientific reasoning have been newly defined. The »human motor« ceased to be a leading metaphor for the working body. It was replaced by a vision of the productive self as an owner and manager of »human capital«. Work was no longer conceived as an object of exchange with a certain prize, but rather as the effect of a collection of assets, a stock of skills or a pool of capacities which enabled each worker to produce an income. Up to now, this development from »human Motor« to »human Capital« has found little reflection in the historiography of the knowledge society. It is the topic of our expert talks. (program)

While a substantial amount of research has addressed single drug trajectories and the conditions and traditions from which the therapeutic revolution emerged, less is known about the end of the so-called »Golden Age«. The conference will pursue broader methodological and historiographical questions about the aftermath of the therapeutic revolution in the timespan from 1970 to the present, its implications for medical and public health practice, its inherent contradictions and predicaments, as well as its end(s). Interestingly, this fact only becomes relevant if there is a certain lack of clarity concerning the intention of the author of the claim, or if such questions are asked like: »What is the point?« or: »What is the argument?«. However, the question »What does it generally mean to claim, to assert, to justify something?« is seldom asked. This is what we do in our workshop. (program)

From mid-19th century onwards a growing number of non-governmental organizations, intellectuals and policy-makers became concerned with 'vices' that appeared to pose a vital threat to national populations and even humanity at large, such as alcoholism, drug trade/abuse, prostitution and devi- ant sexual behaviors. The conference explores, firstly, how 'vices' were framed in the context of inter- national bio-political discourses. Secondly, we seek to understand why the fight against intoxicating substances and venereal diseases became addressed as global issues. Finally, the conference ad- dresses the question of regulation. Anti-vice activism was crucial in setting the agenda for both gov- ernmental interference and the making of international regulatory regimes. (program)

Nonetheless, empirical research seldom mentions critical thinking, which explains its uncertain epistemic status. In this workshop, we would like to discuss two classical positions on this issue, Immanuel Kant and Michel Foucault, and apply them to our own research. Is our own research critical? And how can we make it even more critical? The main textual basis of the workshop are two papers on »self-technologies in the sciences« and »genealogy as critical thinking«.

Reviewing the Past, Envisioning the Future Discussion with Prof. Londa Schiebinger (Stanford). Has feminism changed science? Londa Schiebinger's answer to this question at the end oft the 20th century was pretty optimistic. According to Schiebinger, it was no longer imaginable to exclude women from academic careers, and scientific practices seemed to be quite open to feminist critique. How can we, ten years later, assess the present situation? Is there a straight line of progress? And does Schiebinger's analysis match our daily experiences in scientific communities?

Latsis-Symposium: Science & Democracy A Symposium to Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Ludwik Fleck's Death. Throughout his life (1896-1961) in an «age of extremes» and even after surviving Auschwitz and Buchenwald, Ludwik Fleck firmly believed in and argued for an intimate interdependence of science and democracy, claiming that «science is the art of shaping a democratic reality and being directed by it». The symposium addresses this puzzle by focusing on contemporary issues to discuss the respective roles of democracy and science. Is this problem framing - if ever - still relevant in a world reigned by economical imperatives and by globalization. Can science actually serve as a model for democracy?

Science is still all too often identified with Western science, i.e. science in Western Europe, and its history is written accordingly. The scientific work of other cultures, whether in the Greek tradition (this is the case of science in Syriac, Arabic, Hebrew and Latin, notably) or outside it (science in China and India, notably) is situated on the margins of mainstream narrative of the history of science.
